<description>Systems Workshop uses Structured Planning methods developed by Distinguished Professor Charles L. Owen, to address complex design problems at the systems level. The course emphasized team techniques and specific information structures at appropriate stages of project definition, problem analysis, extensive research, concept development and communication.

The worldwide food system presents many problems, and also opportunities for many compelling solutions. The process included three major phases where groups collaborated in multidisciplinary teams to focus on essential aspects of growing food, connecting growers to eaters, education and sustainability.

The video below was produced as an introduction to the project and the current issues we had hoped to solve for. I worked closely with Cameron Reynolds-Flatt in telling the story of our work.

<description>Tutoring Chicago came to Chicago-based EPIC (a non-profit company that brings together creatives to execute big agency marketing solutions pro bono) for a complete a new name and brand. Formerly known as Cabrini-Green Tutoring Center for the last 45 years, a new name and brand also meant a new outlook for their future and supporters.

As the team strategist, I led the team in developing a plan that helped us gain valuable insights from interviews with key stakeholders – parents, kids, tutors, board members and staff. In addition, I developed experience models and strategic roadmap for the organization to successful transition to their new brand.

The new name “Tutoring Chicago” communicates the organization’s drive to service all of Chicago’s neighborhoods, while the identity and supporting materials communicate the fun, academic as well as personal growth they provide to under-served children.

<description>The focus of this workshop was to see if an engaging and educational experience using an interactive installation as the primary driver for philanthropy was possible. The main objective of the research was to better understand how people might engage with a large-scale pubic installation and if game mechanics would enhance or detract from the experience in order to see if individuals were more or less encouraged to donate to a worthy cause and what elements of the design affected those decisions.

The team wanted to explore what happens when we embed technology (mobile, large display, ubiquitous computing) in a public space and how they engage with it as well as others. Through the prototype that was installed at the Design Research Conference and we captured people's reaction and observations.

In addition, to testing and building a prototype, a research paper was submitted and accepted to DIS 2012 (Designing Interactive Systems) conference regarding the process, which I led. The paper won Best Short Paper and in June 2012, I presented at the DIS conference in Newcastle, UK on behalf of my team.

<description>The mission of rDuo is to provide access to education to children in developing regions and develop a new way to connect people to areas of great need beyond donations.

Through research we’ve found there is a continued need for radio and radio education. Radios provide an effective way to promote education, learning and growth in many developing areas. Radio distance learning has shown success in educating out-of-school children. Despite its benefits, radio ownership is still low in many regions of Africa. A few organizations have focused efforts to bring technology to students in schools as a way of alleviating education problems. However, the focus has primarily been on cutting-edge technologies that tend to be overly expensive, difficult to maintain and repair, and too complicated for children and adults alike. Unlike these higher-end technologies, radios are much more cost-effective, easier to make and maintain, and has the potential to reach a wide wider audience much more quickly.

For more information, please check out our project, a semi-finalist for the Dell Social Challenge. As a team, we also created a blog to post relevant and interesting information regarding this topic to share with each other and the public here.

<description>Facets Multimedia is a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve, to present and distribute independent, world and classic film, and to educate adults and children in art and legacy of film.

Our team worked with Facets stakeholders and founder to better understand their business in the ever-changing landscape. As the decline of DVD sales drop and the rise of digital media consumption, how can film watchers immerse in a dynamic movie streaming experience and expand their film knowledge and interests through Facets Multimedia?

Through research, user experience design, prototyping, and business planning, an application that allows people to stream easily to their companion device was created to support a deeper interest in film experiences and education.

A video was also created to showcase the concept and offerings in use.

<description>For this project, my team worked with a client, a large manufacturing, repairs and operations (MRO) supply company, who offers over 1 million various products across 15 different categories worldwide. With so many products, customers and technical support associates face a breadth of complex problems.

Our goal was to find ways to better deploy technical expertise to the point of need to their customers and empower employees to provide superior customer service. By applying interaction design principles, research methodologies, concept generation, scenario and persona development as well as rapid prototyping, we presented our solutions and ideas to the stakeholders. Through this project, they were able to empathize with people who work for them.

In addition to the final deliverable, our team created a video to demonstrate the concept.

<description>Working closely with the client, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, in New York City, my team was tasked to design solutions for multiple stakeholders: clinicians, patients, patients’ families, and other non-clinical caregivers.

The solutions focused on improving experiences specifically to bone marrow transplant patients in a new facility being designed to treat this specific condition and support procedures in 6 years.

Through interviews, secondary research, workshop development and concept generation, my team developed a system that integrates patient's information, tracks their progress and personalizes rehabilitation activities based on multiple factors that are important to them. The facility also integrates smart technologies that updates real-time data tracking and feedback along with additional service touchpoints.

Finally, we created a video to show how the system integrates not only technology, but supplements an improved overall service and tracking progress.

<description>In light of World Water Day on March 22, Cameron Reynolds-Flatt and I entered the Blue Circle and Visualizing.org Visualizing World Water Day Challenge. We researched and focused our visualization on the disparities of water access and to get a better sense of some of the major water issues in developing countries.

We felt that despite the fact that water is a human right, it is not equally distributed. We hope from this visualization, we cannot only inform, but empower people to help conserve what is left of our precious water resource.

From this challenge, we were awarded Runners-up from the 38 entries around the world. Our work was featured in the March/April 2012 issue of Environment Magazine.

The judges said, "We agreed that their streamlined and lucid infographic did just that — it certainly spurred conversation amongst the judges, causing us to shake our heads and re-consider the impacts of our next flush, our next drink."

<description>Through this project, I learned the process of telling a visual story that is consistent throughout the various touch points with color, typography, layout, message and imagery.

The handmade brand book tells the process of the rebrand of i-GO, a local car-sharing service. I also created a brochure to invoke exploration and travel within Chicago neighborhoods. The brochure, book and website reflect the new brand’s personality.

<description>Motorola was interested in new design concepts on the next imaging phone. The process included product research on current market trends, gain a basic understanding of the manufacturing and engineering of electronics, and gain knowledge in color, materials, and finishes. Through visualization and modeling skills to storytelling, I envisioned a product prototype for Motorola.
